Swine Flu and Summer Camps

July 21st, 2009

With summer camps in 2009 also comes the fear of contracting H1N1, or swine flu.  Fear of the outbreak has even led to the cancellation of summer camps.  Many people are wondering if they should pull their children from kids summer camps.  I generally would advise against this.  While the potential for your child to contract swine flu definitely goes up by sending them to summer camp, you could say the same about any communal place.  The main concern should be ensuring that the camp has a good nurse on staff and is willing to react quickly to common cold symptoms.  That’s one thing that you have to feel comfortable.  It wouldn’t hurt to ask the camp what their policy on swine flu was.  If they look at you blankly, well, maybe then consider another camp.

Summer Camp Reviews

July 18th, 2009

With the summer half over you may begin thinking about reviewing your child’s summer camp experience.  Kids summer camp decision making can be difficult and you may want to review your kids’ experience on a site like CampRatingz to help others making the same decision.  Be sure in writing your review that you don’t personalize the review too much.  Kids often have good or bad experiences based on their social interactions.  If you can go beyond that to speak generally about the camp, your review is more helpful.  Once you’ve contributed to the community, of course, you can feel good about looking at the reviews as you consider what camp to send your kids to next summer!
