The children of recently unemployed workers are being offered free summer camps for their kids my Mad Science Waukesha County, Wisconsin. Quite often summer camps are the plum of the middle and upper class and losing one’s job can snatch this developmental part of summer right away. With summer camps in 2009 also comes the fear of contracting H1N1, or swine flu. Fear of the outbreak has even led to the cancellation of summer camps. Many people are wondering if they should pull their children from kids summer camps. I generally would advise against this. While the potential for your child to contract swine flu definitely goes up by sending them to summer camp, you could say the same about any communal place. The main concern should be ensuring that the camp has a good nurse on staff and is willing to react quickly to common cold symptoms. That’s one thing that you have to feel comfortable. It wouldn’t hurt to ask the camp what their policy on swine flu was. If they look at you blankly, well, maybe then consider another camp.
